Ask CWS: What Social Media Tools Do You Use?

As a social media speaker, I'm often asked what tools I personally use to manage multiple profiles on social media sites. The simple answer is: HootSuite. HootSuite allows me to collaborate with others here at CWS on which networks we're targeting, with what messages, and at what time(s). Furthermore, HootSuite allows me to manage ALL of my accounts with Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn through one simple interface.

If you attended my last seminar, you know that the timing of social media messages is very important. With e-newsletters, timing is less critical because most people review every message in their inbox. Even when you take a vacation, I guarantee that when you return, you will go through each email and either read, reply or delete it. But with social media, we don't do that. We only check Facebook messages as time allows and if we miss a few status updates, it's no big deal.

Research shows that two of the best times to receive feedback on your posts (comments, likes, clicks, etc.) are around 11:00am and 3:00pm. But of course we all have meetings and simply can't always ensure that we're posting during those peak activity hours. HootSuite allows you to schedule these posts in advance, so you can focus on more important things like running your business. They offer both a free plan and a pro plan, which starts at $5.99 per month: a small investment for the benefits and the time saved in a business environmnt.

HootSuite - Social Media DashboardHootSuite has many other features such as click tracking, URL shortening (for Twitter) and reporting tools. If you're getting serious about your social media strategy, I encourage you to check it out. However, keep in mind that while HootSuite is excellent for your officially "scheduled" messages, it's still important to add personality to your profiles with regular posts from your computer or mobile phone.

Tools like HootSuite help to manage communication, but always keep it real: be personal and make sure your company has a "voice."
