Google now providing fresher results

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010 by Jon Bernhardt

Need a reason to update your site with new and relevant content? Well, now Google has released a new search indexing system to find fresher results and provide more relevant pages for searches. This means that when Google visits your page, it will notice changes quicker and post them to their results quicker. This does not mean that Google will find your page faster; it just means that Google will find changes faster and rank the pages quicker.

In the past, Google crawled the entire web, analyzed the pages for results, and then posted those to the index. This often took a lot of time, weeks to months in fact. With the new system, dubbed "Caffeine," Google analyzes the web in small portions and refreshes the results on a continuous basis. As new pages or new information is found, they can be added it directly to the results. This means, Google will now provide faster, fresher and more relevant results.

So what does this mean for your website? Look over your site and think of the last time you updated your content. Not just a word here or an image there. I mean really taking the time to review and change the content to be relevant to your business and what customers are looking for. With the new system, Google is looking to provide searchers with the best and newest results. By spending a little time on your site by reviewing the content, you can see good results from this new system.

Google keeps a lot of information about web site and pages. Quoting Google's blog:

"Caffeine takes up nearly 100 million gigabytes of storage in one database and adds new information at a rate of hundreds of thousands of gigabytes per day. You would need 625,000 of the largest iPods to store that much information; if these were stacked end-to-end they would go for more than 40 miles."

This new indexing system of Google's means that the results they will be providing will be more up to date and fresher. This means finding the latest news, items and updates on web sites. Work to stay relevant and update your content. It can help your site's rankings and your business.
